Nelson: Trader Joe's allure found in people, products

Phil Wofford, manager of the new Trader Joe's specialty grocery store in Oconee County, was trained for the theater stage, but Wofford isn't acting when he expresses his fondness for the company where he has worked for almost 14 years.

"I fell in love (with Trader Joe's) from the very first week I worked here," said Wofford, who comes to the new store from the Trader Joe's in Sandy Springs. "I was one of those people (who) never had been in a Trader Joe's before I went in to apply for a job."

Wofford is not alone in his affinity for the California-based Trader Joe's, known for its quirky-yet-welcoming atmosphere, Hawaiian-shirt-clad employees, low prices, unique and natural foods and "Two-Buck Chuck" wines. Store employees and shoppers alike have helped make it one of the hottest retail chains in the U.S. The company now operates more than 330 stores in 25 states.

At 8 a.m. Friday, Trader Joe's will hold a grand opening celebration for its long-awaited Athens-area store in the Markets at Epps Bridge, across Epps Bridge Parkway from Lowe's and Walmart.

Trader Joe's sells a wide range of grocery items the majority of which bear low prices. Products include frozen goods, gourmet items, kosher foods, organic produce, hormone-free meats, dairy products, imported items, cleaning products, flowers and thousands of items (80 percent of the store's products) packaged under several Trader Joe's private labels - Trader Ming's, Joe's Joe's and Joe's Diner to name a few. Several Trader Joe's boxes of cereals are priced less than $2. Trader Joe's is the exclusive retailer of Charles Shaw wines, known as "Two-Buck Chuck," for it's $2 price tag, though the cost $2.79 - still is a bargain.

The stores also are noted for a selection of foods that feature all-natural ingredients. Customers will find very little, if any, processed ingredients. Corn syrup, preservatives, trans fats, dyes or hydrogenated oils are shunned.

As importantly, Trader Joe's employees - or "crew members" as they are called - make shopping at the stores a satisfying experience that generates return visits.

"I think we could have less of a product, and people would still love us because they feel like they are being taken care of by our crew," Wofford said. "I think it's this one-two punch of people and product that make us something special."

When Wofford first started working at a Trader Joe's, he was living in Los Angeles and trying to make it as actor, but needed a steady-paying job. Although he was unfamiliar with Trader Joe's at the time, the company hired him, and he was immediately impressed by the diverse backgrounds and the caliber of people with whom he was working.

Wofford described his co-workers as "interesting, amazing people," and said, "we all worked under one roof, and the common denominator was that we sold groceries."

While the unique groceries and cheap prices are highly appealing, hiring the right people - bright and friendly - and paying them well with great benefits is part of the secret that makes communities clamor for a Trader Joe's. A full-time crew member might make between $40,000 and $60,000 a year, according to Fortune magazine. Even some part-timers are offered health benefits.
